If there is any year which should test the current relevance of art in our society, it is certainly 2020. It has been an eventful school year: last fall Paris grappled with prolonged transit strikes, while this spring we have had to face a new global pandemic. Nevertheless, as I am sure so many of you have learned in quarantine – the arts must go on (and in many ways, help us to go forward too). Art allows us to contextualize our relationship to the world, and this situation has only highlighted the importance of productions, such as movies and music, which we pepper our days with. Creating new things can also provide a beneficial outlet of self-expression, when perhaps you’re not entirely sure what to say. I hope this publication can be a bright reminder of the value that the arts bring to our existence during a time in which we are constantly re-defining our relationship to art.

It is with my absolute pleasure to introduce Issue 2 of DÉPAYSANTS Magazine to y’all. In this issue we are fortunate to exhibit the work of eleven undergraduate student artists and two alumni working across a variety of media. This semester marks the first release of a year-long issue from the magazine, which allows our student artists to take as much time as they need to. Additionally, the juxtaposition between fall and spring work has been incredibly striking for this artist roster. This is also the first time that the magazine is accepting written submissions and alumni work, which further opens the gates for academic discourse and enables us to shine a spotlight on the AUP arts scene like never before. I must extend my praise out to the wonderful 2019-2020 editorial team who has truly helped make this magazine into something really substantial and to all the student artists who have submitted pieces and consistently supported us, thank you for all of your hard work. Our methodology has always stayed the same: curate the best of what AUP’s arts has to offer; I’m so excited for everyone to see what this issue has in store.

While this entire project has been a long and exciting journey, my time at The American University of Paris has come to an end. It’s been an absolute pleasure to serve as the DÉPAYSANTS Editor-in-Chief since Fall 2018 and produce three issues during my editorship. Getting the opportunity to work with so many student artists and being able to establish a serious and professional platform for their art within the university community has been the highlight of my undergraduate studies. Although I may be graduating, DÉPAYSANTS is just getting started – I hope that through the future editorial team this publication will continue to flourish and shine a spotlight on the student artists doing great work here in Paris.

Au revoir, for now. Vive les arts!
